RETURNING TO BALANCE

Autumn Equinox Ritual

The Autumn Equinox marks a moment of balance, when day and night are almost equal. From here, we gradually move towards longer nights and a more inward season.

It can be a beautiful opportunity to pause, reflect on what the past season has brought you, and consciously decide what you would like to carry forward, and what you are ready to gently release.

You will need:

  • A candle

  • A quiet, comfortable space

  • A journal and pen

  • A small bowl of water

  • A few leaves, flowers, herbs or something from nature

  • Optional: crystals, incense, essential oil or anything that helps you feel grounded

🌿 1. Create your space

  • Find somewhere quiet where you won't be disturbed.

  • Light your candle and place your natural object beside it.

  • Take a few moments to settle.

  • Place one hand over your heart and one over your lower belly.

  • Take three slow, intentional breaths.

  • With each exhale, imagine yourself releasing the busyness of the outside world and coming back home to yourself.

  • You might quietly say: “I arrive here, in my body, in this present moment”

🍁 2. Reflect on what has been

  • The Autumn Equinox is a beautiful time to honour and reflect on the previous season of summer.

  • Take a few moments to journal:

    • What am I grateful for from the summer?

    • What has grown within me?

    • What have I learnt about myself?

    • What moments, people or experiences have nourished me?

  • Don't worry about finding profound answers. Let whatever comes naturally come.

🍂 3. What are you ready to release?

Nature doesn't hold onto what has finished. Trees and planets allow their leaves & flowers to fall when the time is right.

Consider:

  • What am I carrying that I no longer need?

    • Perhaps it is a belief, expectation, habit, relationship dynamic, fear or simply the pressure to be a certain way.

  • Write down whatever you'd like to release.

  • Then take a few breaths and imagine placing those things into the earth.

  • You might say:

    • I honour what has been.
I release what is no longer mine to carry.
I make space for what is ready to emerge.

  • You can then tear up the paper and place it in your bowl of water as a symbolic act of release.

🕯️ 4. Call in the season ahead

  • Now turn your attention towards what you would like to nurture through the autumn and winter months.

  • Ask yourself:

    • How do I want to feel as I move into this new season? Rather than focusing solely on what you want to achieve, think about how you want to feel, Perhaps:

      • Grounded.

      • Peaceful.

      • Held.

      • Connected.

      • Rested.

      • Creative.

      • Loved.

      • Safe.

      • Present.

  • Choose one word to become your intention for the season.

  • Write it somewhere you'll see it regularly.

🌾 5. Close your ritual

  • Thank yourself for creating this space.

  • Thank the summer season for everything it has brought you

  • Thank the Autumn season for all thats to come

  • Blow out your candle and, if possible, step outside for a few moments.

  • Feel your feet on the earth.

  • Notice the air on your skin.

  • Look around you.

  • Let yourself remember that you are also part of nature's cycles.

  • There is no need to bloom all year round.

  • Sometimes we grow.

  • Sometimes we release.

  • Sometimes we rest.

  • And sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply be.

🍂 Your Autumn Equinox affirmation

I release what has run its course.
I honour all that has grown.
I welcome the slower rhythm of this season.
I trust myself to move with the cycles of life.
I am grounded. I am held. I am coming home to myself.
